Mississippi shoppers are gearing up for a big weekend.
Mississippi is holding its first back to school sales tax holiday. Shoes and clothes priced under a hundred dollars per item can be sold without the 7 percent state sales tax.
But the tax will still be charged on many items like backpacks and specialized sports shoes like cleats.
Pascagoula school leaders hope the holiday will help ease the financial burden for many parents.
"It's just exciting that we're getting ready to start the new school year and it gives parents a little bit of excitement to be able to go out and school shop and it might buy that extra belt or extra pair of pants because of the saving that they're going to have as a result of this tax savings,"Said Pascagoula School District Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich.
The Mississippi sales tax holiday begins Friday and lasts until stores close on Saturday. You can find a complete list of what you can buy tax free this weekend by clicking on the link on the right side of this page.
