Southern Miss Deans submit trimmed budgets, anticipating a $12 million shortfall in 2011

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Deans from the University of Southern
Mississippi's five colleges are submitting $2 million budget cut
proposals to the provost. It's the first step in the possible
elimination of staff, instructors and even tenured faculty.
The cuts are the university's response to an anticipated $10
million-$12 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2011. To
counteract that shortfall, the university said it is likely that it
will need to make $7.5 million in cuts from academic programs.
As a result, the five colleges have put together $10 million
worth of possible cuts.
They will be reviewed by the university's Academic Planning
Group, chaired by Provost Robert Lyman and represented by 23
faculty, staff, administrators and students. The group then will
make recommendations to the executive cabinet.
