Speedier Tax Refunds?

Speedier Tax Refunds?

2 lawmakers say they want Alabamians to get their refunds on time next year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Two Democratic legislators from Cullman
want to make sure Alabamians get their tax refunds quicker next
year.
State. Sen. Zeb Little and Rep. James Fields say they will
introduce legislation that will require the state Revenue
Department to pay a tax refund within 30 days of receiving a tax
return.
Currently, the department has 90 days after the income tax
filing deadline on April 15. The department had to delay thousands
of this year's tax refunds until mid-July because of the state's
cash-flow problems.
Little says it's outrageous that Alabama families had to wait to
get their money back in the middle of a recession.
Currently, the Revenue Department pays 4 percent interest on a
tardy refund. The legislation would change that to 12 percent.
