Layoffs At The Alabama State Docks

Layoffs At The Alabama State Docks

Docks director says layoffs are likely as losses mount

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The director of the state docks says layoffs
are likely as the Alabama State Port Authority deals with a $10
million net loss that could get larger before the fiscal year ends.
Jimmy Lyons said in an e-mail to employees this week that the
economic situation globally is terrible, and has hit the docks
harder than expected.
Lyons said the Port Authority cut the work week from 40 hours to
32 hours for 350 employees in April and is now considering several
other options, including layoffs.
Lyons said coal shipments, which account for about half of the
docks business, plummeted quickly and unexpectedly, contributing to
the loss.
