The Mayor and Police Chief announced Monday crime is down in Mobile and they're putting 31 new officers on the street. City leaders say FBI statistics show overall crime is down 12 percent in the city, and violent crime is down 9 percent. But, we took a closer look, and it's all in how you look at the numbers, while crimes like rape, burglary and car theft are significantly down from 2006. Homicides and robberies are up, " the goal is to have the lowest crime rate in the country, that's what we want to be, that's our goal, so any comparison you see with us is really in that vein for us to have the absolute best community in the country as it relates to crime, and that's where we're headed as a city," said Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. County Commissioners Stephen Nodine and Mike Dean released a statement in response to the crime announcement. They say while "the latest crime statistics released by the City of Mobile are certainly encouraging. They also are quite contrary to the story we’ve been hearing from top city and police officials as recently as just a couple of days ago," said Dean and Nodine.
