“I keep expecting him to come to the door anytime, but I know he's not,” says Gene’s mother Tanna Gail Pugh. Saraland police say they found Pugh in his car along I-65 the night of Friday, July 17, 2009, bleeding heavily from his right arm. He was taken to USA Medical Center, but died from his injuries. Police say Janet Diggers cut Pugh after an argument.

“There's no reason for this, I don't know why,” says Gene’s sister Shirley Pugh-Hight. Family members say gene will be sorely missed, but more than that, he was his parents left and right hand.

“My only help that I had to help me around the house here, anything I needed he'd see about me,” says Tanna Pugh. Gene lived with his parents in Chickasaw. Family members spent much of the day cleaning out Gene's car. It’s one of few pieces of his life they have left.

“He was a loving person, he would help anyone he was kind, and if you needed any kind of help he would help you,” says his sister Shirley. Family members say they don't know what started the argument between the victim and diggers. For now, all they can do is deal with their grief.
Relatives say they have no idea how an argument lead to murder. Gene’s niece says they need help paying for funeral arrangements. If you can help, her number is 251-367-7096.
