It’s not just fun and fishing at the 77th Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, there’s also learning. Researchers from the University of South Alabama and Dauphin Island Sea Lab are studying certain varieties of fish being caught at the rodeo. Researchers are recorded data and cutting apart certain species. Organizers say the rodeo’s like a great big scientific sample.

“[It] takes a lot of fuel cost boat time for us as researchers to get out there and sample those fish so when they come into the dock it's a wonderful opportunity for us,” says research assistant Monica Powers. She says this is a partnership they’ve been working on for the last several years. She says they’re learning a lot about fish populations in our area.
