Whether you're making a quick call at a stoplight, or checking your messages on the go the cell phone's become a personal necessity.
“I get all my business e-mail on it, my personal email so I can't live without it really,” says cell phone user Rob Moreland. Tracfone's Safelink program was just introduced in Alabama. It provides free cell phones that include an hour of talk time to low income families.
“It is absolutely 100% free and the phone you get isn't subsidized by the federal government,” says Tracfone spokesman Jose Fuentes. Organizers say cell phones have become very necessary and this program will keep a lot of people safe.
“For an emergency, to stay in contact to gain employment, it is vitally important that people now have cell phones,” says Fuentes. Money for the program comes, in part; from a fee most cell phone users already pay the Universal Service Fund.
“That money is put in to a pool and resellers and carriers can use it for different projects,” says Fuentes. He says, when a Safelink subscriber runs out of minutes, they can buy more Tracfone cards. He says discounted cards for program members will be available soon. For more information you can go to the Safelink site or call 1-800-723-3546. I have found that the website runs slow at times.
