As of late Thursday afternoon, a mother accused of leaving her 3 month old son in a hot car has not been charged in the case.
Gulf Shores police are investigating the incident, which happened around 10 a.m. at Target on Highway 59 in Gulf Shores.
According to Deputy Chief Keith Martin of Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, someone walking into the store noticed the baby and called 911. Witnesses told paramedics the infant was unresponsive and foaming at the mouth when he was discovered.
"As a mom, it just tears me up," said Jody Woodly, a shopper at the store. "I just can't believe the irresponsibility."
Martin says he does not know how long the infant was left alone, but he insists even a few minutes in a unairconditioned vehicle can be deadly.
"It's basically an oven. It basically, in essence, cooks you," said Martin. "Your core temperature starts to rise, and after it gets to a certain point, your body functions shut down."
Fortunately, paramedics were able to revive the baby. Even before he was rushed to the hospital, Martin says the infant had begun responding.
News Five's calls to the Gulf Shores Police Department were not returned Thursday.
The name of the mother has not been released.
