MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The longest recession since World War II
has caused Alabama's tax collections to plummet so badly that more
than 120,000 taxpayers are still waiting for their state income tax
refunds.
The state Revenue Department reports that there are 123,000 tax
returns from individuals and couples awaiting more than $63 million
in refunds, and there are more being processed.
The state income tax is set aside for education programs.
Refunds have to come from education taxes. The state Finance
Department reports that so far this year, those tax collections are
running more than 8 percent below last year.
