Recession, sluggish economy forces Loxley mayor to cancel its popular July 4th fireworks show

There are plenty of 4th of July decorations on display in Loxley and plenty of patriotism, but something will be missing this holiday weekend. Loxley has cancelled its 4th of July fireworks show.

"We just felt that with the way the economy is, it's best not to do it this year," says Loxley Mayor Billy Middleton.

City leaders say the recession forced them to cancel the big show. The move will save the town 12-thousand dollars.

"We haven't had any layoffs and we're just trying to avoid that right now," says Middleton.

Loxley residents will still have a chance to celebrate the 4th. Nearby Robertsdale and Summerdale are both holding fireworks shows.

"It' unfortunate for all of us that we have to cut back, but we're having the show and if Loxley residents want to come down, we'd be glad to have them," says Summerdale Police Chief Dwain Riebeling.

Loxley plans on holding their fireworks show again next year.
