Saraland police made a major drug bust on Interstate 65 over the weekend, one that never happens if the driver was following the rules of the road.

Police Chief Gerald Young said his officers stopped an 18-wheeler around 7:50 Saturday morning for following another vehicle too closely and making an improper lane change. They had no way of knowing at the time what was hiding in the trailer.

A K-9 cop noticed the smell of drugs coming from the front of the trailer. Inside, police found a box with 10 bundles of cocaine totaling 100 kilos or 220 pounds. Young says the drugs are worth $11 million on the street.

Young would not release where the truck came from, where it was headed or how many people his officers arrested in addition to the driver. The truck, drugs and suspects have all been turned over to U.S. Marshals.

Back in June 2007, Saraland Police made another huge cocaine bust on I-65. A man and woman tried to hide over 200 pounds of it in their car. Police found the cocaine hidden in a secret compartment. Police said the drugs had a street value of more than $9 million.
