LAS VEGAS (AP) - It's worked for "American Idol," so why not
apply the same system to the Miss America pageant?
A four-part TV reality series will allow viewers to vote four
contestants into this year's competition, which will air live
Saturday night from Las Vegas on the TLC cable network.
The four contestants will be decided during "Miss America: Countdown to the Crown," which wraps up Friday. The winners will join 11 other finalists at Saturday's pageant.
It's quite a change from the way the Miss America competition
has been waged for much of its 88-year history.
At one time, it was among the most-watched television programs.
But declining ratings numbers forced changes. Miss America
Organization President Art McMaster notes that one of the changes
is providing 15 finalists to choose from, rather than a Top 10
under the old format. He's calling it a "win-win for both sides"
Alabama's entry is 21-year-old Amanda Tapley, a pre-med and piano student at Samford University in Birmingham.
Mississippi's entry is 19-year-old Christine Kozlowski, a University of Southern Mississippi student from D'Iberville.
Florida's entry is 20-year-old Sierra Minott, a sophomore at Palm Beach Atlantic University
