PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A public defender says an Indiana
investment adviser is not mentally competent to be tried on charges
he deliberately crashed his plane in the Florida Panhandle in a
botched plot to fake his own death.
Attorney Thomas Keith asked a judge Wednesday to order a mental
evaluation for his client, 38-year-old Marcus Schrenker.
Keith says he spoke with Schrenker and that he is too mentally
unstable to face the federal charges against him.
Authorities say Schrenker hatched the plot to escape financial
ruin. They say he parachuted from the plane that he left on
autopilot. It crashed later on Jan. 11 and Schrenker sped away on a
motorcycle he had stashed in central Alabama.
Federal agents found him three days later.
