MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Political leaders and military support
groups are working together to try to establish Alabama's first
state-run veterans cemetery. It would be located north of Spanish
Fort.
The state Board of Veterans Affairs has unanimously endorsed the
concept at the request of state Veterans Affairs Commissioner Clyde Marsh. Veterans will ask the Legislature next month to authorize the state Department of Veterans Affairs to operate a cemetery.
Plans call for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to develop the cemetery, then turn it over to the state. Marsh estimates the cemetery will cost $4 million to $8 million for construction and $350,000 a year for operations.
