A civil rights leader with ties to Mobile will play a role in Tuesday's historic inauguration.
The Reverend Joseph E. Lowery, who preached at Warren Street United Methodist Church in Toulminville from 1952-1961, will give the benediction after Barack Obama's inauguration speech.
Dr. Lowery was born in Huntsville and joined the civil rights movement after Rosa Parks' arrest in 1955. Two years later, he and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He served as the organization's president from 1977-1997.
