A new version of an old hypertension drug may help ease hyperactivity in kids with ADHD.
Researchers are testing a 'new' version of a widely used high blood pressure drug called Clonidine.
"Over the years, there was a clear understanding that there were kids who were helped by the addition of clonidine originally to manage side effects," said child pyschiatrist Dr. Robert Lehman.
Prescribed along with a stimulant, Clonidine seems to help reduce hyperactivity. The problem is the drug causes daytime drowsiness in kids.
"It was in an immediate release form that spiked a blood level of Clonidine for the child and then went away," said Dr. Lehman.
The new form of the drug, designed specifically for ADHD, is called Clonicel. it's a slow-release pill, so it's more consistent.
"We're not seeing that daytime tiredness with Clonicel because they're never having a high blood level. It's a very gradual, smooth release," said Dr. Lehman.
The multi-site study is ongoing. For more details, click on the related web links.
