No More Toothbrushes

No More Toothbrushes

Because they are one of the most common items used to make weapons, Inmates now get a different kind of dental hygiene device.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Standard toothbrushes are out at the Lee
County Jail, as officials try to take a potential weapon out of
inmates' hands.
This week, the jail is bringing in brush tips that fit on the
finger.
Sgt. David Velez says toothbrushes are among the most commonly
altered items found in cells during random shakedowns. Staffers
remove anything being used for purposes other than what was
originally intended.
The move wasn't sparked by any recent events, Velez says, but as
a precaution to protect both inmates and officers.
About 700 unused, hand-held brushes at the jail will be donated
to the Children's Advocacy Center, which works with abused and
neglected children.
