MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama sheriffs are looking to change
the way they feed jail inmates now that a federal judge has locked
up a north Alabama sheriff for one night for serving small portions
and pocketing the leftover grocery money.
The executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association,
Bobby Timmons, said Wednesday that sheriffs are working on a plan
to present to the Legislature next month.
Their plan would end the ability of sheriffs to pocket leftover
food money, and it would raise their salaries to make up for the
lost income.
Sheriffs began working on the plan after a federal judge put
Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett in jail for one night and
ordered him to provide better food to inmates. Bartlett testified
last week he made $212,000 in profit from the food program over the
last three years.
