MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Supreme Court has refused to
halt Thursday's planned lethal injection of 62-year-old James
Harvey Callahan, who was twice convicted for the 1982 slaying of a
Jacksonville woman.
The justices voted 8-0 on Tuesday and issued a one-page order
denying a stay of execution, with the chief justice recusing
herself.
Callahan was convicted for the Feb. 3, 1982, slaying of Rebecca
Suzanne Howell, who was abducted from a coin-operated laundry. The
body of the 26-year-old woman was found weeks later, dumped in a
creek.
State prosecutors contend Callahan has exhausted his state and
federal appeals. He faces execution at Holman Prison near Atmore.
