JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi House has started working
on a plan to increase the cigarette tax.
A committee passed a bill today (Thursday) to increase the
excise tax by 82 cents. It would go from the current 18 cents a
pack to $1 a pack.
The bill is expected to come up for debate in the full House in
the next several days.
Governor Haley Barbour says he wants to increase the cigarette
tax, but by a smaller amount.
