DAPHNE, Ala. (AP) - A drug and alcohol treatment center in a
Daphne residential area will close following neighbors' complaints.
Michael Handley, CEO and founder of Destin, Fla.-based Townsend
Recovery, says the outpatient clinic will close next week because
of fewer patients and declining profits. But Handley also says the
community's "lack of understanding" about addiction treatment
contributed to the decision.
The clinic has operated for a year at Mercy Medical Center on
Villa Drive.
City Council member Cathy Barnette, a past president of the Olde
Towne Daphne Association that opposed the clinic, says the issue
was whether the clinic was suitably located in a residential area.
The city plans to go ahead with a Jan. 20 meeting to discuss
revoking or denying renewal of Townsend's license.
