A Sign Of The Times?

A rough recession has the City of Foley offering business owners a bailout, but some say it's a little too late.

The City of Foley is offering business owners a bailout. The City is temporarily letting business owners post signs that are usually in violation of the City's sign ordinance. While the city admits their retail tax revenues are down about 9 percent, the extra signage is to help boost business during a struggling economy.

City officials say several business owners asked for the moratorium. But some businesses owners believe it is the City's fault for having a sign ordinance in the first place. "I think it's too late. They used to hound anybody for putting anything out trying to better your business and now that they are seeing the times are tough, now it's ok,"Said Craig Huite, Wise Guyz Restaurant.

The moratorium comes with some limitations. Business owners still cannot place signs in the right of way. Mayor John Koniar tells News Five the plan to keep the moratorium in place until the economy rebounds.
