MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A new state report for the first three
months of the fiscal year shows Alabamians are spending less,
except when it comes to alcohol.
For October through December, the state's sales tax collections
are down nearly 10 percent from a year earlier. But beer tax
collections are up 4 percent, and income from state liquor stores
is up 10 percent.
The director of the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers
University, Robert Pandina, says that's customary for difficult
economic times.
