MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - At least two California couples are
fielding calls from out of work Alabamians who are trying to reach
a state unemployment hotline.
Linda Jahraus lives in Laguna Beach, Ca., and said the ordeal
started with a few calls a day about six months ago but has
steadily grown into a noisy nuisance.
The call confusion has also added to the frustrations of the
state's unemployed.
The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations set up a
toll-free number, 1-866-234-5382, for out-of-work Alabamians to use
to apply for benefits and conduct other business.
The calls are supposed to go to centers in Montgomery or
Birmingham but have been going through to California.
AT&T administers the state's phone accounts and spokeswoman Sue
Sperry said they will be working through the weekend to isolate the
problem.
