Gumbo for a good cause was being stirred at the University of South Alabama. Despite the rain, more than two thousand people bought tickets for the first ever USA College of Medicine Gumbo Chili Showdown. The event was to raise money for the Regan Robinson Young Memorial Foundation. It provides a scholarship in memory of a med-student who battled cancer while in school. Organizers say their first effort is a big success.
“We've got a lot of great medical students working on the event and the USA family has really given us a big hug and surrounded us with a lot of support and we've got teams from all over the medical community and all over the mobile community,” says College of Medicine Class President Grant Zarzour. Winners took home the "golden spoon award" for the best recipes.
Organizers say they had more than 50 cooking teams sign up.
