GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Scientists at the Institute for Marine
Mammal Studies are working to save a dolphin found Tuesday in a
foot of water on the beach in Pass Christian.
Workers say the dolphin was treated for parasites, was de-wormed
and put on antibiotics.
The dolphin has been floating in an aboveground pool inside a
tent.
The dolphin weighs 550 pounds and measures nearly 10 feet long.
It also must wear a life jacket, and socks of sorts on his
flippers.
IMMS veterinarian Connie Chevis says because he is ill, the
dolphin can't swim or support himself, so volunteers stay in the
water with him and guide his movements.
Chevis said his prognosis is guarded. If he survives, she says
the dolphin likely will be released into the wild.
