WEAVER, Ala. (AP) - A man who allegedly left hydrochloric acid
in a soda bottle that his 11-year-old cousin drank, leaving her in
critical condition, is being held at the Calhoun County Jail.
Detective Charles Plitt said 42-year-old Thurman Wayne Tubbs of
Weaver was held Friday after he surrendered at the police station
Thursday evening. It was not clear if he had a lawyer.
Police had been searching for Tubbs since he fled from his
camper trailer before they arrived Wednesday for a search of the
camper that turned up meth labs. Authorities said the acid in the
bottle was used in the making of methamphetamine.
Tubbs is charged with assault, chemical endangerment of a child
and manufacturing meth. Police said the girl, Kristen Michelle
Kelley, accidentally drank the acid from a Sprite bottle on Feb. 13
while playing outside her home.
