PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia
are in Pensacola celebrating the 450th anniversary of the Spanish
coming to Florida.
Hundreds of school children, waiving red and yellow flags,
cheered the royal couple during a motorcade Thursday from Pensacola
Beach into a downtown square where both spoke. Red and white are
the colors of the Spanish flag.
They also visited the site of the battle of Pensacola in 1781
when the Spanish defeated the British.
Spanish sailor Don Tristan de Luna arrived in Pensacola on
August 15, 1559, with a contingent of more than 1,500 soldiers,
servants, settlers, priests and Mexican Indians.
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson talked
about the history shared by Florida and Spain.
