Keeping Tabs On Recovery Spending

Keeping Tabs On Recovery Spending

Government website set up to break down President Obama's spending bill falling short on keeping tabs on spending in specific areas.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama promised taxpayers they could use the Internet to keep an eye on the money Congress has
approved to stimulate the economy. But so far it looks like that's a promise that will be hard, if not impossible, to keep.

The site Obama promised last week is set up, it's true. But so far, it's falling short when it comes to the idea of keeping tabs on spending in specific areas. The site breaks down the huge spending bill into broad categories, and provides state-by-state estimates of jobs that will be created. But it doesn't provide an area-by-area breakdown, at least not yet.

The White House says it will post more information as it becomes available. But they acknowledge they can't predict which specific projects will be included as part of the spending plan, because states make those decisions.
