Alabama's Busiest State Park Gets A Facelift

Men and women from across North America gave up their Tuesday morning to give Gulf State Park a face-lift.

"It makes you feel good inside, I like helping people when I can," says Jim Irke of Illinois.

Snowbirds from as far away as Canada planted more than 300 live oak trees inside the park...a park that's seen much better days.
Hurricane Ivan wiped out this once rustic and heavily wooded park, but thanks to dozens of volunteers, these new trees will help restore the park to its natural glory.

"We're trying to help the park re-establish after Ivan," says Ted Dunham of Ontario, Canada. "We want to make it a little bit better for the plants, animals and people. It'll be nice to be able to look out the back window of the trailer and see the trees higher than the trailer."

Ivan killed more than 3000 trees inside park. The tree-planting project, called "Operation Oak," was sponsored by Baldwin EMC and the National Wild Turkey Federation.
