MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP - The Alabama House has passed a bill that
supporters say would increas the number of movies, television shows
and commercials made in Alabama.
The bill to provide exemptions on sales and use taxes for movie
production companies passed the House Tuesday on a 102-0 vote. The
bill now goes to the Senate for debate.
The state once offered financial incentives to film companies,
but that ended in 2006.
The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre, said
almost no movies have been filmed in Alabama since the state
stopped offering the incentives.
The bill calls for the state to pay for the incentives by
requiring some taxpayers to pay penalties when their tax payments
are late.
