MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has passed a bill that
would prevent convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a college or university.
The bill by Rep. Jamie Ison of Mobile would also prevent
convicted sex offenders from loitering within 500 yards of a
college or university.
The bill passed the House Tuesday on a 97-0 vote.
Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living
within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools. Ison's
bill expands the current law to include colleges and universities.
The bill would not prohibit convicted sex offenders from
attending a college or university, but they would not be able to
live on campus.
