ATLANTA (AP) - Martin Luther King III is heading to India Friday
to recreate a page of history.
The son of the American civil rights icon will be retracing a
journey his parents took in 1959 to the homeland of Mahatma Gandhi.
Martin Luther King Jr. took inspiration from the martyr who
symbolized the power of peaceful, civil disobedience in India's
struggle for independence. The 1959 trip left King more determined
than ever to end racism in America through nonviolent means.
Martin Luther King III will be accompanied on the trip by John
Lewis and Andrew Young, who served in the civil rights movement
alongside his father. Lewis is a Georgia congressman.
King says the philosophy of nonviolence is needed now more than
ever.
The trip will include a visit to Mumbai, where terrorist attacks
last November killed 164 people.
