JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby
DeLaughter has pleaded not guilty to five federal counts in a
judicial bribery case.
The plea was made Thursday in U.S. District Court in Oxford,
while the indictment initially remained sealed. An April 6 trial
date was set.
The plea comes only two days after noted anti-tobacco attorney
Richard "Dickie" Scruggs pleaded guilty to mail fraud charges in
the same bribery investigation.
DeLaughter presided over a legal dispute between Scruggs and
other lawyers over millions of dollars in fees from asbestos
litigation. The case has been the focus of an intense judicial
bribery investigation that toppled some of the most powerful
lawyers in Mississippi.
