Bernice Gaston has lived in Fairhope most of her life. Gaston heard about the drive-by shooting that happened less than a block from her house.
"I think it's terrible," says Gaston. Fairhope's a pretty quiet place, you know, you have a little something but we don't have a lot of bad stuff over here."
Investigators say Leslie William's drove by a house on Middle Street south of downtown Fairhope Tuesday night, pulled a gun and shot at least five times. Three bullets hit the house.
"When you shoot into an occupied dwelling, you have no idea what's on the other sides of that wall," says Fairhope Police Chief Terry Sanders. "You have no idea who's on the other side of that wall."
Police say Williams knew the homeowner and was apparently trying to settle a score. The Prichard man was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
"This is unusual," says Sanders. "This doesn't happen in Fairhope so we're glad we were able to make a successful arrest and got someone in custody. The fact that our guys made an immediate arrest, I can assure the community that we have a safe community to live in."
