The Coast Guard has resumed hearings to determine who was at fault in last
summer's massive oil spill in New Orleans.
Monday morning (2/9) jurors heard testimony from a former manager for the
tugboat company involved in the accident. Gary Daigle said he wasn't
surprised when Captain Terry Carver left his post. Carver put an apprentice
in charge of the tugboat so he could drive to Illinois and confront his
girlfriend about cheating on him.
Daigle also testified that it was not unusual for DRD Towing to allow under
licensed crew members to man its boats. However, attorneys for DRD Towing are
placing the blame on the crewmembers.
Last July, the tug collided with the ship Tintomara causing 283-thousand
gallons of oil to spill into the Mississippi River.
Meanwhile, the hearing is expected to wrap up at the end of the week.
