Investigators in Bay Minette say a man poured a toxic chemical on his ex-girlfriend after an argument the day after Christmas. The assault happened at a house on West Almyra Street. Detectives say the chemical used is called "Liquid Fire."
"Liquid fire is a chemical that's heavily acidic and is used to clean out drain pipes and sewer pipes," says Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland. "Once it gets on you, it's impossible to get off. It's called liquid fire for a reason."
Carrie Taylor was rushed to USA Medical Center's Burn Unit. The toxic chemical ate through Taylor's clothing, burning much of her body.
"He held a knife to her throat and poured liquid acid on her and tried to kill her," says Taylor's mother, Barbara Gentry. "It burned her chest really bad. Everywhere the acid went, she's going to be scarred."
Police arrested Mario Mendez late Monday and charged him with three felonies. Mendez is being held in the Baldwin County Corrections Center without bond. Taylor's burns are not life-threatening.
