The University of Alabama is eyeing another national championship.

This time, it's less about pigskin and more about recycling. The university has nearly doubled the volume of waste it recycles on campus in the last year to 886 tons.

University logistics and support services director Tony Johnson said the campus likely will double that in the next year to about 1,400 tons. Most of the waste is office paper.

The college is a contender for the Recyclemania championship, the largest collegiate recycling competition. The winner last year was Rutgers University with 1,065 tons recycled.

The university increased its volume by aggressively pursuing recycling in high-traffic areas like dining halls and offices. It also added mattresses, light bulbs and wood to its list of recyclables.
