You can pay your property taxes with plastic again. The Mobile County Revenue Commission is accepting credit cards.
They stopped taking cards in the summer after realizing the fees were eating their lunch. Now, they've figured out a way to make it work.
Starting December 17th, you can swipe your Visa, Mastercard, Discover or your debit card. It will cost a flat fee of 3.95 to use your debit card and 2.4% convenience fee for credit cards.
This news comes at a good time for many of you.
Your property taxes must be paid or postmarked by December 31st, 2009 and this is a way for people to spread out the payments.
Revenue Commissioner Marilyn Wood says most people paid with plastic last year and they expect a rush in the next two weeks. "Last year, we had over 16 million dollars in credit card payments, that's huge. That's the biggest amount we've ever had on a credit card since we started taking credit cards probably ten years ago."
This program is only available online or in-person.They will not accept credit card payments by phone or in the mail.
