Mobile's giant moonpie event will get some extra advertising thanks to Mobile County Commissioners.
The 25,000 dollar request came from the Mobile Area Hotel-Motel Association. The money will used to promote the downtown celebration that will ring in the new year.
But that vote didn't come without some heated discussion. Commissioners Merceria Ludgood and Mike Dean voted for it.
Commissioner Steve Nodine voted against the money. "I just don't believe government should be involved in spending money on moonpies. What's so hard to understand about that?"
Majority rules.
Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson sat in on the moonpie vote. He started the celebration idea and says stirring the pot is what gets the people out. "I love it. I tell you without controversy, we're not gonna get anywhere. You all know this from last year."
Richardson believes that this year's celebration can get 30,000 people downtown. By the way, that's double the number from last year!
