A child was critically injured on his way to school Thursday. It happened on Azalea Road. Police say the child was trying to cross the street when he was hit by a car. The driver tried to swerve but couldn't get out of the way in time. The 11-year-old is a 5th grader at Fonde Elementary. People we talked to say they're not surprised something like this happened here. Our camera rolled as Fonde let out for the day. Despite the busy traffic on Azalea, there were crowds of children walking home, "there's been ample documentation that children are crossing the street all over Azalea Road. And, it's a very dangerous situation. We are aware of it and we, you know, we can make an effort to prevent this type thing, but, really what we would want to do is educate parents on the safety that their children need to make it to school," said Mobile Police Spokesman, Officer Christopher Levy. Police say speed does not appear to have played a role in the accident.
