A Louisiana man is in the hospital after Pensacola Police say he was shot while attempting to flee from police. Now the two officers involved are on paid leave - one of them for the second time this year.
According to Pensacola PD, 39 year-old Derrick Cox of Gonzalez, Lousiana, called police just before 9 o'clock Friday night. Police say Cox, who identified himself as "Mike Taylor", told dispatchers a woman was chasing him with a butcher knife at the Pensacola Village apartments.
Officers Erik Goss and Pat Doyle showed up to the complex on North Davis Highway, but could not find either person.
Officer Shawn Thompson arrived for backup a short time later. Officers attempted to stop a truck identified as the suspect's at a local strip club, but after learning the suspect was Cox and not "Mike Taylor", the suspect attempted to flee.
According to police, Cox put the truck in reverse and was driving toward Officer Goss. That is when police say Goss shot the rear of Cox's truck.
Police say Cox then sped forward toward Officer Thompson, who tried to get out of the truck's path. According to police, Thompson fired at the truck before Cox stopped. Police say Cox was struck three times in the right arm and was taken to a Pensacola hospital. Police say charges are pending against Cox. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Pensacola Police are investigating the incident.
Officer Erik Goss was also involved in a shooting back in August. In that shooting, police say 51 year-old Buddie Raynaud held up the Circle K on Bayou Boulevard. Officers told Raynaud to put his hands up, but instead he reached for his gun. That's when Officer Goss shot him in his side.
