More Money For Moonpie?

More Money For Moonpie?

The Mobile Area Hotel-Motel Association is asking Mobile County Commissioners for 25,000 dollars to promote Moonpie Over Mobile!

The downtown event to ring in the New Year was a hit last year. It drew more than 12,000 people.

The 650-pound moonpie cost taxpayers 9,000 dollars to make but was too small to see when lifted for the big event. Instead of being on the far side of Mobile River, the pie will lift up next to Cooper Riverside Park before midnight.

The hotel folks are looking at the event as a regional draw and want the county to pitch in. Commissioners could vote on the moonpie money on December 14th. They are expected to meet with hotel officials next week to discuss the idea.

We were able to reach 2 commissioners by phone. Commissioner Mike Dean says he wants to hear the pitch before deciding on the funds. Commissioner Steve Nodine says he will vote against the moonpie money citing tough economic times. No word on how Commissioner Merceria Ludgood would vote.
