The Mobile County District Attorney plans to charge 34 year old Demetrius Thomas with capital murder in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend Cindy Longmire. Thomas was arrested by Mobile Police about two hours after the shooting at a group home for people with special needs in Theodore. The shooting happened at about 9:30am Wednesday.
D.A. John Tyson, Jr. said he plans to charge Thomas with capital murder which means the suspect could face the death penalty.
Thomas reportedly showed up at the group home in Theodore and fired a shot through a kitchen window, hitting Longmire, a 32 year old mother of four children. Witnesses said Thomas then climbed through the window and shot the woman four more times. At least three people were inside the home when the shooting happened. Thomas was able to leave the scene before police arrived. He was later arrested at the Phoenix Park Apartment complex on Dauphin Island Parkway.
Tyson said Thomas was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries and then questioned by detectives for most of Wednesday afternoon. He was later transported to metro jail pending a bond hearing.
It was no secret to Cindy Longmire's friends and co-workers that she and Thomas were having problems. She had reportedly been staying in a shelter for women while looking for a safe place to live with her children. She is also referred to as his common-law wife and Thomas is believed to be the father of her four children.
The children were in school, two of them at Phillips Preparatory Academy, the other two at Spencer Elementary, when the shooting happened. The schools were locked down as police searched for Thomas but later returned to normal operation after the children were retrieved by police and Thomas was arrested.
