Mobile's top cop is stepping down at the end of September. Garrett has been with the department since 1971 and was promoted to chief three years ago.

He says his health isn't what it used to be and after getting pressure from his family and doctor, he decided to call it quits.

"There's a bit of sadness with this because anytime you work in profession for 38 years, there should be but I'm also excited about what lies beyond October 1. Right now nothing really and this is a good thing."

Mayor Jones says he will look locally and within the department for a new chief.

Asked if Mobile's retired FBI Chief Debra Mack is a possible candidate, Jones had this to say. "She's not in this department. Tiffany Craig asked, "Could she potentially be in this department?" I said from in house. She's not in house."

News 5 has learned that Mack accelerated her retirement from the FBI and left the bureau on August 14th instead of the end of the month. A source close to this story says Mack was part of an internal investigation involving Mayor Jones. Jones claims to know nothing about a federal investigation.

Another name mentioned for the job as chief is the current Deputy Chief of Administrative Services, Tyrone Williams

Deputy Chief Lester Hargrove will be interim chief until a new appointment is made.
