The News 5 Investigative Team confirms that the Poarch Creek Indians bought Mobile Greyhound Park. Eddie Menton, the President of the Mobile County Racing Commission, confirms the purchase.
Menton says the tribe will own 65% of the track. The original owners will keep the remaining 35%.
Now, they must go through an application process with the commission to complete the deal. Menton tells us that the track in Theodore was struggling financially and believes the new owners will bring it back to life and save jobs.
The big question is what will they do with the place?
As you know, the Poarch Creek Indians own and operate Wind Creek Casino in Atmore. Menton says making the park on Old Pascagoula Road something bigger would require changing the law. "They could get a law passed to allow slot machines. Otherwise, there won't be any machines here. This will still continue to operate as a dog track." In addition, the track has live simulcast horse racing all over the country.
The CEO of Poarch Creek Indian Gaming isn't letting the cat out of the bag but we're expected to hear something about their plans as early as Sunday.
The tribe also purchased the Pensacola Greyhound Track!
