Former police officer Monnie Tripp points to a variety of apparent gang graffiti on the back of a historic building in Grand Bay.
“The kids need to know if you're going to be in a gang it's more serious than other crimes, larceny or vandalism,” says Tripp. He’s also a member of Citizens for a Better Grand Bay. Tripp says he saw several signs and a few buildings tagged with similar markings at the start of the summer. Members of Citizens for a Better Grand Bay are asking for advice from the sheriff's office.
“[Deputies have been] taking out some drug activity in the area, the police presence is pretty prevalent,” says Tripp. Major Chad Tucker with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office says they have no evidence of organized gang activity in grand bay. He says, thanks to local support, they've been able to increase drug arrests in west Mobile County. Tripp says many of the signs have already been replaced by the county and new tags haven't popped back up which is a good sign. Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran will be at a meeting tonight with the organization during its regular monthly meeting. It will be at seven in the Grand Bay Community Center on Highway 90.
