BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman and
HealthSouth Corp. founder Richard Scrushy are asking the U.S.
Supreme Court to overturn their federal bribery convictions.
Attorneys for both men say appeals were filed this week with the
court.
Siegelman's appeal hangs on a central question: Whether it
really was a crime for Scrushy to donate money to Siegelman's
lottery fund before he was reappointed to a state regulatory board.
Siegelman and Scrushy were convicted of bribery and other
charges in 2006.
Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in prison and
served nine months before a court freed him on bond last year
during his appeal. Scrushy is serving a nearly seven-year sentence
after a court ruled him a flight risk.
