Social Networking During Disasters

New FEMA head favors citizens networking during disasters.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The new head of the nation's emergency management agency says he's all in favor of citizens using the latest technology to help spread the word when disaster strikes.

FEMA administrator Craig Fugate says blogs and social networking make it easier for people to post videos and communicate during disasters. He says having hundreds of thousands of people posting updates during storms makes perfect sense, and can make a big difference.

Fugate says that's preferable to waiting for the government to speak.

As for suggestions that information coming from average citizens isn't "official" enough, Fugate says that when people are "watching their house burn down," that's pretty official to him.
